Sock Monsters review: the best family game for children aged 4 and up?
To share
Brief summary: Sock Monsters is a charming family game for 2 to 4 players where you try to collect three pairs of identical socks. Its simple rules make it accessible from age 4, while the clever dice mechanic and mini-legacy system keep it engaging for parents too. Our conclusion: a must-have for families who truly want to play together.
What is Sock Monsters and how do you play it?
Sock Monsters is a family game where you try to collect three pairs of identical socks by moving your pawn around the room and flipping tiles or picking up socks. But before you can do this, you first play as a Sock Monster — a fun twist where you can secretly search for socks or even steal them from your fellow players.
The die that rolls under the monsters is a brilliant invention: it keeps the interaction playful without becoming chaotic. The gameplay is wonderfully light-hearted yet cleverly constructed, with enough choices to keep parents engaged as well.
What age is Sock Monsters suitable for?
Our children, aged 4 and 6, had all the rules down after just one game — in fact, they corrected us halfway through. The box states 6+, but our experience shows that it works perfectly from age 4, especially if a parent guides the first game.
In the meantime, the children implicitly learn to make their first strategic choices: "Am I going to steal socks from someone who already has them, or am I going to keep flipping tiles?" And honestly: it's extra nice that the children can truly win, without you as a parent having to hold back. The luck factor provides a nice balance between young and old.
What is the mini-legacy system?
What makes Sock Monsters extra special is that you can unlock new elements after a few sessions. A kind of mini-legacy system — but without having to tear or break anything. Super original.
We are not yet ready for the new rules or game pieces, but as soon as we are, an update to this review will certainly follow. The idea alone makes you play each game with curiosity: how long until the next surprise?
What is the design like?
The design is a bull's-eye: colourful, playful and full of charming little monsters that immediately bring a smile to your face. When the game was delivered, the children were literally jumping with excitement to start.
The materials feel sturdy and are well-suited for children's hands. No small, fragile parts that get lost easily — exactly what you want in a family game that regularly comes to the table.
