Review: Speculaas

The perfect snack...

And I'm actually talking about the game, not the cookie itself. Speculaas combines simple rules and a beautiful design into a surprisingly strategic puzzle that you can quickly pull out if you have twenty minutes to kill.

Each round, you receive a stack of cards that you pass to your neighbor—just like in 7 Wonders , for example. From that stack, you choose either an ingredient card or a recipe card (depending on the round).

Place your chosen card in front of you on your personal grid. You score points by fulfilling the requirements of your recipes as best as possible. The rules are incredibly simple, making it easy for anyone to join in—perfect for families and casual gamers alike.

Passing the decks of cards creates a lot of subtle interaction. You see what you're passing, so you can sometimes try to "steal" something the other player needs. Despite its simplicity, the game remains exciting until the last card.

The box also includes an extra café expansion, which adds some extra competition and replayability without making the game more complicated.

The design is warm, charming, and perfectly on-theme—it'll instantly make you crave a cookie. The iconography is clear, the materials feel solid, and the game looks as good as its name suggests.

Speculaas is exactly what a good casual game should be: fast, accessible, and interactive. The clever draft mechanic, the puzzle, and the fun café expansion ensure this game will undoubtedly be back on the table soon.
