What is the game about?

At the beginning of the 16th century, King Manuel I of Portugal traveled to the Alhambra in southern Spain. What he saw there changed everything: the breathtaking Moorish tile decorations, the famous azulejos, completely captivated him. Back in Portugal, he immediately commissioned a similar decoration for his own palace in Évora. As one of the country's most talented tile artists, you were chosen for this royal commission. Every choice counts: the wrong tile in the wrong place, or too much material wasted, and you lose the king's favor. Only the artisan who constructs their mosaic most elegantly and thoughtfully will adorn the palace for eternity.

How do you play the game?

Each player has a personal board with five pattern rows on the left and a 5x5 mosaic wall on the right. During the draw phase, you draw all tiles of one color from a factory disk—the remaining tiles are moved to the center of the table. Drawn tiles are placed in front of you in one of your pattern rows; once a row is complete, one tile is moved to the wall, and you score points for each adjacent tile. Any tiles that don't fit in a row end up on the penalty bar and cost you negative points. The game ends when a player completes a complete horizontal row on the wall, after which additional bonus points are scored for complete rows, columns, and diagonals.

How is the game experienced?

Azul won the 2018 Spiel des Jahres—the board game world's most prestigious award—and currently holds the #3 spot in the BGG Abstract Games category, with a score of approximately 7.7/10 and over 100,000 ratings. It's the most direct and tactically tense game in the entire Azul series: simple rules that can be learned in a single round, but with surprising depth through reading your opponents and deliberately blocking their plans. The heavy, cast resin tiles are tactile and visually pleasing—all that color on the table never fails to command attention. Critics have noted the game's rather abstract nature and the distant theme, but this doesn't diminish the tension that builds as the central stack grows and no one wants to be the first to grab it. Azul is a rare combination of accessibility and sharpness that draws both non-gamers and seasoned players back to the table again and again.
