What is the game about?

Portugal, early 16th century. King Manuel I, known for his grandiose building projects, dreamed of a summer pavilion to honor the most illustrious members of his royal family. He summoned the country's finest craftsmen to create this magnificent structure. The project called for the finest materials, the most refined techniques, and an eye for perfection possessed by few. But fate had other plans: Manuel I died before the first stone was laid. Now, centuries later, you seize that missed opportunity. As a master craftsman, you return to Portugal to build the pavilion that was never meant to be—and to prove yourself the most worthy to honor the memory of the royal family.

How do you play the game?

Azul: Summer Pavilion is played over six rounds, with a different tile color acting as a wild card in each round. During the draw phase, you draw all tiles of one color from a factory disk or from the center—any wild cards on that disk must be taken one. After the draw phase, players take turns placing tiles on their personal board, which shows seven stars of six spaces each, numbered 1 through 6: to place a tile, you discard a number equal to the number on that space. A placed tile scores 1 point plus 1 point for each adjacent tile within that star; if you enclose a pillar, statue, or window, you immediately receive bonus tiles from the central board.

This is the ideal game for...

You can play this game with 2 to 4 players, from 8 years old. The duration is approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The language of the game is Dutch & French, but you can play the game completely language independent.

How is the game experienced?

Azul: Summer Pavilion is considered by many to be the most player-friendly variant in the Azul series. While the original feels exciting and confrontational, Summer Pavilion minimizes frustration: negative points are rarer, there are more placement options, and you can carry up to four tiles over to the next round. The scoring mechanic is more intuitive than in the first installment, and the combo chains during the placement phase provide a strong sense of satisfaction. Critics note that the placement phase is slower than in the original, which can increase the game's length. For those who enjoy a richer strategic palette with multifaceted endgame bonuses, this is the most comprehensive and rewarding Azul yet.
