What is the game about?

It's the mid-19th century and Barcelona is the most densely populated city in all of Europe, its inhabitants crowded behind the old city walls in narrow streets. When those walls finally fall, Ildefons Cerdà — today considered the father of urban planning — presents his ambitious plan for the Eixample, the expansion the city so desperately needs. You are one of the master builders shaping this new district: you erect residential blocks for those who wish to escape the old city, lay out wide avenues and tram lines, and provide the district with public services. And if you want to attract wealthier citizens, you venture into Modernisme, the new architectural and art style that is gaining popularity. Brick by brick, under your hands, grows the Barcelona that the world still admires today.

How do you play the game?

In Barcelona, each turn you place two workers on a street corner of your player board and perform the two actions that meet there. With these actions, you build apartment blocks, lay streets and tram lines, establish public services, and collect prestigious Modernisme. After your actions, a building phase follows in which new buildings appear on the main board, after which you prepare for your next turn. The game proceeds over a variable number of rounds, interrupted by three interim scoring moments and a large final tally. The player with the most points at the end wins.

You can play this game with 1 to 4 players, from 12 years old. The duration is approximately 60 to 90 minutes. The language of the game is English, but you can play it completely language independent.

How is the game experienced?

Barcelona is lauded by reviewers as one of the most beautiful and cohesive Euros of recent years, where every action seamlessly flows into the next. Critics particularly praise the rich decision space and the many paths to victory points, without turns becoming top-heavy. The theme also receives commendation: it is unusually strongly interwoven with the mechanics for a game of this type. The beautiful table presence and the satisfying chaining of actions make every turn worthwhile. The only recurring criticism is a somewhat messy rulebook, but once you get started, the game runs like a dream.
