What is the game about?

A pile of colorful fabric pieces lies ready, the needle tin is open, and somewhere in the room, a cat is already eyeing the first warm spot. In Calico, you build a personal patchwork quilt turn by turn: meticulously arranged color groups for shiny buttons, clever pattern combinations for kittens that decide to settle down with you. Each quilt has its own preferred shape that you try to respect, but the available fabric pieces are never exactly what you need. It's a soothing yet subtly challenging puzzle that plays out differently every game.

How do you play the game?

Each turn, you place one hexagonal fabric tile from your hand onto your personal board, then draw one of the three available tiles to replenish your hand. Three or more adjacent tiles of the same color create a knot; tiles with matching patterns attract cats, each with their own placement requirement. Each player has three goal tiles on their board that award bonus points if the correct color or pattern combinations are placed around them. The game ends as soon as each board is completely filled; players then score points for knots, cats, and goal tiles.

How is the game experienced?

Calico is one of the most acclaimed tile-laying games of recent years: the design by Kevin Russ and illustrations by Beth Sobel have won multiple awards and are consistently mentioned in the same breath as Cascadia as an accessible yet substantial puzzle game. The three scoring paths — buttons, cats, and goal patterns — constantly interfere with each other, making every tile placement a small but meaningful decision. The high replayability, thanks to changing cats and goal tiles, ensures that even after dozens of games, each setup feels fresh. Ideal for those who enjoy relaxing yet tactical solo or multiplayer puzzles.
