What is the game about?

Deep beneath the waves, life teems: sardines darting in schools, venomous lionfish preying on smaller creatures, and shrimp nimbly scurrying away. As a marine biologist aboard a research vessel, your task is to tame that wild commotion and build rich, balanced ecosystems. The ocean, however, is unpredictable—each round, the tidal current shifts the board, sweeps fish away, and disrupts carefully laid plans. Timing, positioning, and a keen eye for the food chain are your primary weapons in the battle for the most beautiful underwater world.

How do you play the game?

Each player takes turns playing a fish card onto the shared ocean grid, adjacent to an existing card, activating that fish's unique power if applicable. Larger fish can capture smaller neighbors via the food chain; captured fish go to the Reserve or directly to the personal ecosystem. Discarding two identical fish from the Reserve activates powerful extra actions. At the end of each round, the current moves all fish one space in the direction of the flow, after which empty spaces next to coral are replenished. Only closed ecosystems count towards the final score, which is determined by public objective cards and the secret fish card in each ecosystem.

You can play this game with 2 to 4 players, from 10 years old. The duration is approximately 30 to 80 minutes. The language of the game is Dutch, but you can play the game completely language independent.

How is the game experienced?

Fintastic Sea looks colourful and playful, but hides a surprisingly layered puzzle game full of combo possibilities. The wave mechanic is a creative idea that keeps the board constantly in motion and forces players to think flexibly. The game strikes a fine balance between accessible rules and tactical depth: when you close an ecosystem is just as important as how you build it. Reviewers praise the strong "just one more turn" feeling and the satisfying chain reactions when everything comes together at the right moment.
