What is the game about?

In a cozy town full of picturesque shops live the craftdrakes: small, magically gifted cousins of their large, destructive relatives. Where their giant family members burn down villages, these adorable creatures use their fire to bake bread, forge iron, make crystals sparkle, and create the most delicious goods. You are a Flamekeeper, one of the few who understands the language of dragons and can provide them with an ideal home. As you distribute the drakes among the shops and help them flourish with enchantments, your reputation grows among the grateful shopkeepers. Whoever earns the most respect will ultimately be crowned the grand Master of Flamecraft.

How do you play the game?

In Flamecraft, each turn you visit a shop — always a different one from the previous turn — and choose between gathering or enchanting. When gathering, you collect goods and coins from the shop, from the dragons present, and from existing enchantments; when enchanting, you spend goods to gain renown and place a craft dragon whose ability you immediately activate. With collected goods, you also fulfill the secret objectives of your fancy dragons, which yield extra renown at the end. As soon as a shop becomes fully occupied, the town expands with new shops. The game ends when one of the card piles is depleted, after which the player with the most renown wins.

Ever since its release, Flamecraft has been considered one of the most charming and beautiful games on the market, with illustrations that consistently draw admiration at the table. Reviewers praise it as an excellent "gateway-plus" game: the rules can be explained in ten minutes, but the many paths to prestige—enchantments, fancy dragons, and ever-new shops—keep it engaging. The game immediately won several awards, including the Origins Awards Fan Favorite and the Dicebreaker Tabletop Award for best board game of 2022. Seasoned strategists sometimes find the depth a bit light and the setup a bit cumbersome for its weight, but they are clearly not the target audience. Those who love a cozy, accessible game with an irresistible theme and plenty of scoring opportunities will find Flamecraft a keeper.
