What is the game about?

Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, twelve islands are scattered across a blue-green sea. Two ancient Kahunas — mighty sorcerers of the Pacific region — gaze at each other across the water. Each island has its own connections to its neighbors, and whoever controls the majority of bridges around an island claims it as their territory. But the islands are interconnected, and snatching one bridge can set off a chain reaction that costs your opponent multiple islands at once. Magic and strategy are inextricably linked here.

How do you play the game?

Each turn, a player plays one or more island cards to place bridges on the connections between those islands, or two cards to remove an opponent's bridge. Whoever controls the majority of connections to an island places their Kahuna token on it and removes all of the opponent's bridges on that island — which sometimes has a domino effect on adjacent islands. The game lasts three rounds; after each round, whoever controls the most islands scores. The scoring increases: one point in round one, two in round two, and in the final round, the difference in islands. The player with the most points after three rounds wins.

How is the game experienced?

Kahuna is a timeless two-player classic that was recommended by the Spiel des Jahres jury in 1999 — and it’s still worthy of that praise almost thirty years later. The game balances on the beautiful intersection of simple rules and tactical depth: every card play is well-considered, and the chain reactions when conquering islands lead to sudden dramatic twists. Reviewers praise its speed, the excellent component quality of the Kosmos edition, and its high replayability despite its compact card game format. One of the best two-player strategy games in its weight class.
