What is the game about?
Somewhere on the Mild Mile track, a curious group stands at the starting line. There's the giant baby who takes up an entire space, the centaur who kicks everyone he passes back two spaces, Sisyphus who drops his piece every six and has to start over, and the Lovable Loser who earns points as long as he's in last place. Magical Athlete is a Japanese racing game from 2003 that became a cult classic—and received a stunning reissue in 2025 with an updated design by Richard Garfield (the man behind Magic: The Gathering) and new characters and artwork. The game promises chaos and delivers flawlessly.
How do you play the game?
Before the races begin, all players draft four runners from a rotating pool. Each race is secretly chosen by one runner; then, in turn, each player rolls a die and moves their runner that number of spaces. Each runner has a unique power that can change the rules of movement—from pushing others back to teleporting, blocking, or hitching a ride. The first two runners across the finish line earn points (more the later the race takes place). There are four races on a double-sided board (Mild Mile and Wild Wilds), and the player with the most points after all is declared the Magical Athlete.

How is the game experienced?
Magical Athlete is a polarizing yet beloved game: those seeking chaos, laughter, and absurdity will find the ultimate gaming experience here; those seeking control over their destiny will be frustrated. The wooden runners are tactile and humorous, the artwork exudes cheerful anarchy, and the drafting gives the game just enough strategy to be more than just gambling chaos. However, for gaming nights with family or friends who want to laugh without worrying about the outcome, Magical Athlete is hard to beat—and almost always ends with, "One more round."
