What is the game about?

As the sun sets and the moonlight filters through the trees, the fox mystics emerge. They traverse the forest in search of fiery phoenix feathers, glistening mushrooms, mysterious eggs, skulls, and rare herbs — ingredients for spells and potions that only the cleverest mystic knows how to concoct. But the forest is finite, and rivals are many. Every spell you cast opens an opportunity for another to counter with a more potent incantation. Twilight fades into moonshine, and when the morning light breaks, the collection will decide who was the most powerful mystic of the forest.

How do you play the game?

The game proceeds in two phases—twilight and moonlight—each with as many turns as there are tiles on the board. On your turn, you place a number token on a tile in the grid; opponents can then place a higher value on an adjacent tile to steer the route. Whoever ultimately claims a tile adds it to their collection. Clever players steer the path via "corner casts" to claim multiple tiles with lower values. In the end, all tiles contribute to a score via their own scoring system—sets, rankings, or unique combinations—supplemented by achieved objective cards and completed potion recipes.

How is the game experienced?

Nocturne stands out with one of the most original bidding systems in its genre: you don't bid on a single item, but instead chart a path through a grid, making every move both an investment and a bluff. The combination of spatial thinking, set collection, and potion recipes gives the game surprising depth without the rules becoming overwhelming. Reviewers praise the interplay between the various scoring mechanisms and the high replay value due to variable setup. Beth Sobel's illustrations contribute significantly to the enchanting atmosphere the game exudes. Nocturne is excellent for those who enjoy puzzle-like games with a strong interactive layer.
