What is the game about?

Puerto Rico 1897 takes place in the year following Puerto Rico's historic political independence, a period of opportunity, reconstruction, and economic ambition. Players take on the role of independent farmers who not only grow crops but also help shape the infrastructure of a new country. You manage your own game board with plantations, buildings, and workers, while the harbor, ships, and trading house create shared interests.

How do you play the game?

Each round, players take turns choosing a role. Everyone can perform the corresponding action, but the active player receives an additional advantage. By growing crops, shipping goods, and purchasing buildings, you build an engine that becomes increasingly efficient. Workers are essential: without staff, nothing produces or functions. The game ends when certain conditions are met, after which buildings, shipped goods, and large buildings earn points.

How is the game experienced?

Puerto Rico 1897 feels like an honest, modern reinterpretation of the classic game: the same strategic sharpness, but thematically richer. Role choice remains the beating heart of the experience, ensuring constant tactical considerations that rarely become repetitive. The interaction through the ships and the trading house keeps everyone engaged until the final turn. The result is a solid Eurogame that's accessible enough for families, yet deep enough to continue to excite seasoned players.
