What is the game about?

Nottingham lives by its market, and that market lives by what passes through its gate. Merchants arrive with sacks full of cheese, bread, apples, and chickens, all properly declared as they should be. At the bottom of those same sacks, however, there might be spices, silk, or a crossbow, because that's where the real money is made. The sheriff stands at the gate and must decide whom to believe. This second edition comes in a larger box, with the sixth merchant, the black market, and the deputies included right away.

How do you play the game?

You put cards in your pocket, close them, and tell the sheriff what's inside. The sheriff chooses which ones he opens and which ones he lets through without inspection. If your declaration is correct, he pays you a fine; if you lied, you pay and the contraband is destroyed. Bribes are allowed, and negotiation is part of the game. At the end, you count the value of your goods, with bonuses for whoever has the most of a certain item.

How is the game experienced?

This is a game that relies entirely on the table, rather than the rules: the cards are the setting, the bluffing is the game. Reviews have called it a staple for groups that like to talk for years, and this edition includes the expansions right away. Those who prefer to play purely on their own strategy will find it random, because your outcome depends heavily on who you're playing against. It also plays much slower if everyone stays on the safe side. But if there's one person at the table who dares, they'll automatically draw the rest in.
