What is the game about?
Far away, on an island unknown to the outside world, live spirits as old as nature itself. The lightning that tears through the mountains, the river that flows through the valley, the darkness that creeps into people's dreams — these are not legends, but real, living forces that have guarded the island for centuries. The indigenous Dahan know them, fear them, and live in a fragile balance with them.
But then the ships appear. Colonists from a distant continent land on the shores, move inland, and build villages and towns in places where spirits once reigned. They do not understand what they are disrupting. They do not feel the anger of the land — or do not want to feel it. As the plague spreads across the island and the Dahan are pushed back, the spirits awaken with renewed strength. It is time to remember who truly belongs here.
How do you play the game?
Each player controls a unique spirit with its own power cards and a growing presence on the island board. At the start of each round, all players simultaneously choose which powers to use—fast powers are resolved before the invaders, slow powers after. The invaders follow a fixed pattern: they explore new lands, then build settlements there, and finally ravage them, placing blight on the land. The more blight the island bears, the closer a shared defeat approaches. Destroying or driving out invaders also generates Fear, and as it increases, the threshold for victory lowers—eventually, the colonists will flee even if villages remain.

How is the game experienced?
Spirit Island consistently ranks in the top 10 on BoardGameGeek and is widely regarded as one of the best cooperative games ever designed. Its theme and mechanics are almost inseparably linked: the spirits, with names like "Lightning's Swift Strike" or "Ocean's Hungry Grasp," all play and feel radically different. The game challenges you to puzzle and experiment, rewarding a truly cooperative approach — each turn presents a unique problem that demands collective solutions. A common criticism is that the rulebook was written by someone who already knows the game inside and out, making it difficult for new players to get started. However, those who overcome that hurdle will discover a strategic masterpiece that continues to reveal new depths even after dozens of plays.
