What is the game about?

The One Ring must be destroyed, but the road to Mordor begins in the Shire. Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Pippin, Boromir and their allies journey through Middle-earth – and each stage of their journey demands something different from them. In this cooperative trick-taking game, the chapters of Tolkien's first book come to life as challenges you must overcome together. But communication is barely allowed, and each character has their own secret objective unknown to the others. Only those who rely on instinct, knowledge of their fellow players, and a well-chosen card at the right moment, will lead the Fellowship safely onwards.

How do you play the game?

The game has eighteen chapters that are preferably played in order. Whoever deals the One Ring plays as Frodo; the other players then choose a character based on their hand. Each character has a unique trick-taking objective: Frodo wants to capture ring cards, Pippin wants as few tricks as possible, Gandalf must win exactly one trick. The One Ring is the only trump, but rings cannot be led until someone plays an off-suit one. Communication is limited; players may not discuss their cards. If you fail to meet all character objectives, you lose the chapter.

This is the ideal game for...

How is the game experienced?

The Fellowship of the Ring: Trick-Taking Game is one of the best Lord of the Rings games of recent years — and at the same time one of the most elaborate cooperative trick-taking games since The Crew. The eighteen chapters build up well in complexity, the asymmetric character objectives give each hand a fresh dynamic, and the beautiful stained-glass illustrations contribute strongly to the atmosphere. Reviewers place it alongside The Crew as a fully-fledged alternative for those who appreciate the LotR theme or want to play a narrative campaign. BGG users give it a score of almost 8 — an impressive result for a card game of this format.
