What is the game about?

It’s the late nineteenth century and more than nine thousand windmills dot the Dutch horizon. Their sails tirelessly pump water from the low-lying polders, where endless fields of colourful tulips sway in the wind between the dikes. This flower once caused the first financial bubble in history; today it is inextricably linked to the Dutch landscape and the famous Flower Route. You take on the role of an ambitious tulip grower and entrepreneur who wants to make his fortune amidst this palette of colours. Expand your windmills, search for rare bulbs from local traders and distant merchants, and let your flourishing fields turn the competition green with envy.

How do you play the game?

In Windmill Valley, each turn you choose an action by turning the gears on your millboard, with the position of the sluice determining how far your wheels move. With your actions, you upgrade your gears to strengthen your engine, plant tulips in your fields, and build windmills on the main board to activate rewards from adjacent fields. Additionally, you hire helpers who provide extra bonuses for certain actions, complete contracts for end-game scoring, and visit the local market or trade with distant lands. Tulips and completed contracts yield the most victory points at the end. The game ends as soon as a player has rotated their large mill wheel a certain number of times, after which the player with the most points wins.
