What is the game about?

The trucks arrive, and the zoo is open and ready for new life. Lions, elephants, pandas, and their young are ready to find a place in your carefully planned enclosures. But a good zoo director knows: you can't have it all. If you get too greedy, your barn will fill with animals that have nowhere to go — and that's bad for your reputation and your score. Plan smartly, watch what the competition is doing, and build the most attractive zoo in the region.

How do you play the game?

On your turn, you choose one of three actions: place an animal tile on a truck, take all tiles from a truck and put them in your zoo, or spend money for a special action. Enclosures that are completely filled score points; partially filled enclosures also score, but fewer. Animals that do not fit in an enclosure go to the barn and incur negative points. Stalls offer additional scoring opportunities for enclosures that are not fully complete. The player with the most points at the end wins.

How is the game experienced?

Zooloretto won the Spiel des Jahres — the most prestigious award in the board game world — in 2007, and that's no coincidence. Michael Schacht managed to translate the wonderful push-your-luck mechanism of his card game Coloretto into a full board game that feels intuitive yet constantly offers tense choices. The simple but insidious core — do you take that truck now, or hope for something better? — works just as well for children as for adults. Reviewers and the Spiel des Jahres jury both praised its broad accessibility and its ability to captivate people of all ages. With over 350,000 copies sold, Zooloretto is a proven family classic.
